Embroidery Classes for Beginners in Bergen County NJ: What to Expect at Your First Stitch & Sip

So you've been curious about embroidery. Maybe you saw a finished hoop on Instagram and thought "I could do that." Maybe a friend dragged you into signing up and now you're quietly panicking about whether you'll be the worst one in the room. Maybe you've googled "embroidery classes for beginners in Bergen County NJ" at 11pm and somehow ended up here.

Welcome. You're in the right place.

This post is going to walk you through exactly what happens at an Embroidery Babes Stitch & Sip — from the moment you walk in to the moment you hold up your finished hoop. No surprises, no intimidating craft-store energy, no prior experience required. Just an honest look at what beginner embroidery classes actually look like when they're done right.

Never held a needle before? Perfect. That's exactly who our workshops are designed for.

First Things First: Do You Actually Need to Know Anything?

No. Zero. Absolutely nothing.

We know every workshop says this and not all of them mean it. We mean it. Embroidery Babes events are built from the ground up for people who have never touched an embroidery hoop in their lives. The curriculum, the pacing, the instructor guidance — all of it is designed for a room full of first-timers.

In fact, experienced embroiderers sometimes find our events a little slow at first, because we don't assume anyone knows anything. We start at the very beginning and take the whole room with us. If you already know what you're doing, great — you'll get to the fun part faster. If you've never held a needle, you'll be right on track from minute one.

According to the Craft & Hobby Association, over 60% of adults who try a new craft for the first time do so in a social or class setting — which means you are very much not alone in showing up as a complete beginner.

What "Beginner-Friendly" Actually Means at Embroidery Babes

It means the instructor demonstrates every stitch before asking you to do it. You watch, then you try. If you get stuck, someone is there to help. There's no keeping up, no falling behind, no silent judgment when your first French knot looks a little rough. (It always does. Then it gets better. That's the whole point.)

Everything Else You Need

Scissors, any additional tools, and all instructional materials are provided. If the venue offers food and drinks — and most of our Bergen County venue partners do — that's available separately. You just need to show up. Literally everything else is handled.

Arrival: Getting Settled

You arrive at the venue — a restaurant, bar, or event space in Bergen County that we've partnered with for the evening. You check in, find your seat, and discover your kit already laid out and ready to go. The room is filling up with other people who are also looking around trying to figure out what's happening, which is immediately reassuring.

Get a drink. Say hi to whoever's next to you. Take a photo of your kit if you're so inclined. The instructor will get things started shortly.

The Introduction: Learning the Basics

The instructor welcomes the group and walks everyone through the fundamentals: how to thread a needle (there's a trick — we'll show you), how to start and secure your thread, and how to do the first stitch of the evening. Everything is demonstrated before you're asked to try it yourself.

This part takes maybe 15-20 minutes. By the end of it, you will have already made your first stitch on an actual embroidery project. The learning curve is real but it's short.

The Middle: Getting Into the Flow

This is where the magic happens. Once you've got the basics down, the instructor guides the room through the design section by section. You stitch. You talk. You sip whatever you're drinking. The conversation in the room gets louder and easier as everyone relaxes into the rhythm of the work.

Research from the Flow Research Collective at Claremont Graduate University has found that repetitive, skill-matched tasks — exactly like embroidery — reliably induce flow states characterized by full absorption, reduced self-consciousness, and elevated mood. In other words: the middle part of the workshop is basically science-backed happiness.

This is why so many of our participants describe their first Stitch & Sip as "better than therapy" — not because we're therapists (we're not), but because the act of making something with your hands creates a genuine state of flow. And flow states are deeply restorative!

"Can I come alone?"

Absolutely, and more people do than you'd expect. Solo attendees almost always end up having some of the best nights because they're not managing group dynamics — they're just open to whoever's next to them. Our events tend to be incredibly welcoming to solo guests. It's one of the things people mention most in reviews.

"How long does it take to get good at embroidery?"

After one Embroidery Babes workshop, most participants feel confident enough to practice at home. Many come back for a second event within a month. Some become regulars. A few have told us it changed their relationship with craft entirely.
